Little carelessness could be dangerous, but then her grandfather made sure that it should not cost his little granddaughter’s life because of it.
In this heart-stopping CCTV footage, the 18-month-old girl’s grandfather can be seen jumping onto the tracks to save her as the train speeds towards them at Wentworthville station in Sydney, Australia, at about 10.30 a.m. on Sunday.
As the freight train driver sounded a horn and came within 100m of the station, the man was able to get the pram and the baby girl to safety. Unable to get himself back onto the platform, he was forced to run away as the train headed down towards him. He jumped for his safety on a broader section of the tracks and escaped unharmed.
Police praised the brave actions of the girl’s rescuer. “[It was] heroic. He’s run down the tracks to the end of the platform. Baby [was] very lucky, grandfather just as lucky.” Acting Inspector Paul Reynolds said.
The girl suffered cuts and bruises to her head but was otherwise uninjured.
The 62-year-old man, who had only arrived from India three days ago, was on an outing with the child, his wife and the girl’s mother.
All’s well that end’s well.
