“A picture speaks a thousand words” was very well quoted and the same happened this time.
A controversy exploded in Jharkhand on Wednesday after photos of the state education minister apparently paying floral tribute to former president APJ Abdul Kalam, who is still alive, went viral on social media, triggering demands of her resignation.
The pictures were reportedly taken at a school function where Neera Yadav, the state’s Human Resource Development minister, was the chief guest. The pictures were published in a newspaper.
What did Neera Yadav say in her defense?
Ms Yadav denies that she had paid floral tributes to the former President and missile scientist which is done when someone is no more.
“There were many portraits of leaders kept at the school. Mr Kalam was was one of them. I only applied a tilak. The garland was already there,” she said.
“It is wrong to suggest I garlanded the photo. Mr Kalam is a distinguished personality and a former president, everyone knows that” the minister added.
What were the other sparks?
The Opposition was unimpressed as Congress leaders took to the streets and burnt the newspapers in which her picture was published and going against Ms Yadav.
“She should step down from her post. Even if she did not garland Kalam sahab’s photo, why did she not ask the school administration to remove the garland,” Congress leader Shamsher Alam said. The incident showed how ill-informed BJP ministers were, he added.
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the second largest party in the assembly, said the BJP was risking the fate of the state’s students by not terminating the education minister.
